The Crushing of Leviathan

“On that day the LORD with his relentless, large, strong sword will bring judgment on Leviathan, the fleeing serpent – Leviathan, the twisting serpent. He will slay the monster that is in the sea” (Isaiah 27.1).

Leviathan is a fearful beast in Scripture. It is something people cannot control but God can (Job 41). The psalmist uses the beast as a figure of speech for Egypt (Psalm 74). Here, Isaiah seems to be using Leviathan as a picture of Satan, the twisting serpent. Perhaps Leviathan represents the nations energized by Satan. There is coming a day when the LORD will bring judgment upon Satan and the nations. “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16.20).

Leviathan is indeed formidable. But the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has rendered him powerless over the believer. He can be resisted. As we submit ourselves to God, he will flee from us. But soon, in that day, God will crush him under our feet. When this happens, all conflict with the devil will end.

Are you aware of this conflict with Leviathan? If you are not, perhaps you are a part of the world system. We are conformed to this world or conformed to Christ. If you are aware, are you struggling? Are you discouraged by what is happening? Find courage in the fact that Greater is God the Holy Spirit who is in you than Leviathan infusing the world. Nothing is able to separate you from God’s love in Christ Jesus – not even angels, principalities, nor powers. What God has promised, He will do. He “will bring judgment on Leviathan, the fleeing serpent – Leviathan, the twisting serpent. He will slay the monster that is in the sea.”
