“[The Idolater] feeds on ashes. His deceived mind has led him astray, and he cannot rescue himself, or say, ‘Isn’t there a lie in my right hand’” (Isaiah 44.20)?
Many things we eat and drink are harmful. If we don’t eat right, we deprive our bodies of essential nutrients. We are weak and lethargic. We cannot live up to our potential. If I eat only what I crave, good food becomes nauseating to me. If continue to subsist on fast food or sweets, I will eventually destroy myself physically.
Every day I live in idolatry …for this present world …is a day that carries me farther from God. It is also makes the pleasures of God instead of the pleasures of this world strangely dim. I’ve developed an appetite for what is leading to my spiritual destruction. I am sinning against my own soul. “Whoever finds [wisdom in Christ] finds life, and obtains favor from the LORD; but he who sins against [wisdom in Christ] wrongs his own soul; all those who hate [wisdom in Christ] love death” (Proverbs 8.35-36).
May the pleasures of this world become strangely dim today. Father, give me wisdom in Christ.
