The True Existential Threat to the City of Man

“On that day …The moon will be put to shame and the sun disgraced, because the LORD of Armies will reign as king on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, and he will display his glory in the presence of his elders” (Isaiah 24.21, 23).

The City of Confusion (24.10) represents the nations of this world. This city faces imminent destruction and will make way for the City of Jerusalem. There is the City of Man and the City of God. A day of Great Tribulation is ahead for the City of Man. This is when God will judge the nations culminating in the return of Jesus Christ.

“Behold, the LORD makes the earth empty and makes it waste, distorts its surface and scatters abroad its inhabitants” (Isaiah 24.1). The fact that we are not wise stewards of this earth is indisputable. One day “the land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered. The earth mourns and fades away, the world languishes and fades away; the haughty people of the earth languish. The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant” (Isaiah 24.3-5).

We have corrupted and will continue to corrupt the environment. We will not live by our Creator’s words. We have established our own boundaries of right and wrong …good and evil. We have broken the everlasting covenant of God made with Noah. The greatest existential threat against the environment today is the sin of the inhabitants of this earth. While we see problems with the environment today, the suffering and judgments during the future Tribulation are so catastrophic that half the world’s population will die. These judgments are described in Revelation.

The only way to save the environment is to save the inhabitants of the earth from sin and degradation. Sin is and always will be the greatest existential threat we face. This is why creation groans and longs for deliverance. As believers, we ought to be concerned about the environment. This is our Father’s world. We must be wise stewards over it. Wisdom comes from God alone. We cannot collectively solve environmental problems because we will not collectively bow the knee to Jesus Christ. The City of Man does not know that the earth belongs to the LORD and the fullness thereof. If we are to care for creation, we must go to Him for the wisdom needed to do so.

However, the reality is that the earth faces imminent destruction. On that day God is going to bring a time of trouble over the face of the earth unlike anything we have ever witnessed. While He promised to never destroy the earth again through a flood of water, He will indeed purge the earth with tribulation and fire. He will put an end to the City of Man to make way for the City of God. Prepare for that day by turning from your sin and trusting in the only Savior, Jesus Christ.
