“I will place the key of the house of David on his shoulder; what he opens, no one can close; what he closes, no one can open. I will drive him, like a peg, into a firm place. He will be a throne of honor for his father’s family. They will hang on him all the glory of his father’s family: the descendants and the offshoots – all the small vessels, from bowls to every kind of jar. On that day” – the declaration of the LORD of Armies – “the peg that was driven into a firm place will give way, be cut off, and fall, and the load on it will be destroyed” (Isaiah 22.22-25).
Eliakim is contrasted with Shebna in this chapter. Shebna was unfaithful and selfish. He used the authority granted him for self gain. Eliakim was God’s servant. He used the ‘key’ or authority granted him for the good of the nation. Our text states that he was like a peg driven into a wall. Many burdens were placed upon him. Eventually, the load was too much. He could not carry the weight of Judah’s sin and rebellion. He couldn’t prevent the nation’s destruction and exile.
However, Jesus Christ is God’s greatest servant. He is the One “who has the key of David, He …opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens” (Revelation 3.7). Jesus is the dependable Peg. All of our burdens and sin were placed upon Him. When He was crucified or cut off from the land of the living, the burden of our sin was destroyed. Since He arose the third day, He has the power to grant us His righteousness. He shall also reign as King on the throne of David, the key of the house of David shall be upon His shoulder.
Trust In Jesus as your Peg. He is able to carry you through. There is no one else who is able to support the weight of your sin, grief, and sorrow. You are unable to bear your own burden of sin. No one else can bear it for you. But Jesus can and Jesus will. He who knew no sin became sin for you so that you might have the righteousness of God in Him! Believe ON Him.
Jesus is also able to support the weight of your daily burdens. There isn’t any temptation He cannot help you overcome. There isn’t any trial He cannot help you through. Trust in Him with all your heart. Don’t lean on your own abilities or understanding. Instead, acknowledge His presence in your life every step of the way. He will direct your paths!
