Answering the Messengers of Doom

“What answer will be given to the messengers from that nation? The LORD has founded Zion, and his oppressed people find refuge in her” (Isaiah 14.32).

The oppressed people of God find refuge in Him alone. Many times Judah sought refuge in alliances with unbelieving nations. What answer would be given when people would hear of Babylon sweeping in from the north? What would the nation do when the messengers came in pale, terror-stricken, and shocked by what they saw? Judah should understand that the LORD founded Zion. Therefore, they ought to trust in the LORD and find refuge in Zion, refuge in the LORD Himself.

Do you find refuge in the LORD? The Jewish Pharisees spent their lives seeking after righteousness but could never have it. Why? It is because they found a refuge in the process of religion. They relied upon themselves. This is how most of all religion in our world works. It is reliance upon doing rather than trusting in what has been done. Jesus died on the cross to take away our sins and give us His righteousness! How shall He not also freely give us all things?!

“Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not achieved the righteousness of the law. Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works” (Romans 9.31-32). What answer do you give when the messengers of doom come? When fear lies? When anxiety nags? When a crisis or trial looms? When temptation whispers? If your answer is to find refuge in the LORD, you will not be disappointed. The name of the LORD is a strong tower. The righteous run to it and are safe!
